Fed up with the child support system and her ex-husband’s invisible presence in her children’s lives, divorced mother of four, Trisha Martin decided to take matters into her own hands. Martin, who has been raising her children for the past seven years without the help of her ex-husband, was sick and tired of being sick and tired. “I quit my full-time job of thirteen years to start my own business so that I could be more available to my children,” the author and entrepreneur says. “I have made major sacrifices for my children and we have suffered tremendous financial hardship because of them”, she adds. On the verge of homelessness because of a foreclosure on the home that she struggled to keep for five years even after her ex-husband left, she and the children moved into property owned by a family member. Without the burden of a mortgage, the creative spirit racked her brain to figure out a way to use her writing gift to prosper her family.
With one book, My Naked Mind, An Intimate Collection of Poetry, already published and more books to follow, the author has set out to find another medium to use her gift; something people would purchase quicker than perhaps a book. Trisha noticed that t-shirts were being worn by everyone from newborns to very grown folk. She had to tap into that market with a catchy t-shirt slogan. Incorporating what helped get her family into the mess that they were in and what could possibly revive them, she opted for the phrase, “Got Deadbeat???” Noticing other t-shirts with the “Got Whatever,” slogan on them, she hoped the idea would sale.
Deadbeatism, in her opinion, is the root of society’s demise. The phrase doesn’t necessarily have to apply to only deadbeat dads, as it was originally coined. There are deadbeat dads, moms, kids, spouses, bosses; the list can go on. In her effort to beat the financial crisis that can be created because of a deadbeat parent’s failure to meet their monetary obligation to their children, Martin’s goal is to start a charity where a portion of the proceeds from the t-shirt sales will be used to help families in her community who, like her own family have struggled with the purchase of even basic needs such as clothes, shoes, toiletries and sometimes even food. To kick off the war on deadbeatism, Martin has designated December 28, 2008 as Tired of Deadbeats Day. Place your orders today!
Martin has launched, Alwayz Sayin Somethang, which includes her t-shirt slogan business, books, greeting cards, bumper stickers, personalized poetry and soon, speaking engagements.
