Nappykat, This would be a good time to get them started in their own financial legacy. Maybe open a savings account in their name or get them a savings bond. Maybe a book about self presentation/...

Getting Educated at the Family Meeting

So.... we had a family meeting this week, and after I had my say, I asked the boys if there was anything good or bad that they wanted to share.

So my youngest (he's 7) shared that he had an awesome day at school, and told about his friends and the fun they had. Then he proceeded to say "oh yeah, I have something for the family meeting".

"I think we need a dad, a real dad".

So I asked about their biological father (whom they visit when we go back to my hometown on holidays, but not much else).… Continue

Giving Thanks

Hi Moms, I wanted to share my personal gratitude list with you all on this Thanksgiving Holiday. I invite you to share your lists below.

1. I am thankful for my health. I've lost about 34 pounds this year!

2. I am thankful for my family. Even though we live 500 miles away, I talk to my parents, brothers or cousins daily.

3. I am thankful for all of my new friends and connections on BMC!!! I've had many great conversations and idea exchanges from the moms here.

Its time for a Change....So what are you going to do?

Okay moms, we celebrated, were elated, we are walking on Cloud 9. But as President Elect Obama explained, we must be the change we seek in the world.

What are you doing in your home, community, personal life, career, world?

How are you working for change?

Will you do anything differently?

Do you feel different?

How does having a Black President CHANGE things for you?

Hi Nicole, I would love to send you a free copy of my book for boys... ages 9-12. (I have extras at home) It is written in pretty simple language with no "don't (s)" in the book.It is not harsh and believe me what they hear from other students can be very influential. (I taught for 27 yrs). Let me know if you would like a copy.....read excerpts at : www.helenbrewer.com Marie

Yeah girl, another girl. A pink, estrogen filled palace. My poor hubby is at wits end trying to attend to all the drama, divas, tears-and me too! I officially received my charter last week! Arkansas has its first chapter of Mocha Moms! I am so excited.

Hi Nicholle, Hope you are having a fabulous week. Thanks for your energy, drive, and passion to make the world a better place! Marie "It’s Crunch Time!”, This is a new children’s book by Marie Brewer (www.helenbrewer.com for the link to book) This is my book of muscle for boys (ages 9-12) to point them in the direction of HOPE!...This is an interactive book where they can write about their feelings. It discusses acceptable behavior, honesty, good self-image, respect for females and animals, appreciation for teachers/school, choosing good friends. The book also talks about resisting gangs, guns, drugs, violence, alcohol and bad influences. Let's attack the behavior, not the boy. "It's Crunch Time!" , by Marie Brewer, www.bbotw.com. Be a part of the village to help our boys envision their true God-given purpose!
We can turn this thing around! SEE! THINK ! ACT!

i haven't been on this site for a while and missed a comment you left about talking to your sons about life lessons. I've recently published my book, 17 to Life: A Black Boy Memoir ( On Becoming a Human... Being in America). The book addresses what it was like to go from black boy to black man in this country. I would love to get feedback from you, your sons and other mothers about the content. You may also click my Youtube page to hear me reading from the first few chapters... Look forward to hearing from you and your sons.
