If It Don't Fit...

When I was a child, I remember one of my favorite songs was, If It Don’t Fit, Don’t Force It, by Kellee Patterson. That song came out in 1978 and I could not have known what they were talking about at such an early age because if I had, years later, I would not have stayed in my marriage as long as I had. Actually, I don’t even know if I would have gotten married at all to the man that fathered my three boys. I mean really, in the three years before we even tied the knot, I had gone through an o… Continue

The Power of Positive Thinking

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can. I know I can, I know I can, I know I can. Yes, I can, yes I can, yes I can. Sounds good don’t it? Well I’ve been thinking these and saying these positive chants forever and guess what, no I haven’t, no I can’t, no I didn’t. Not if it was dependent on others. I hope I’m not coming off sounding like a bitter Betty because I’m not. I’m just stressing the fact that despite all of my efforts and self encouragement, I still haven’t. Yeah, I’ve made some sm… Continue

I Have a Dream

As Election Day crawls forward and the strong possibility of America’s first African American president is almost a reality, I can just imagine Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. saying to himself, “now that’s what I’m talking about.” In these here United States, why hasn’t there ever been a person of color leading a nation as multi-colored as we are? I mean, really, think about it, is the Caucasian race the only race that can lead? Why haven’t more people of color even tried to run, was it because the… Continue

All Eyes On Me

I love me some Tupac, and his song, All Eyes On Me, should be my theme music. (Every gansta needs theme music. From: I’m Gonna Get You Sucka). Before I get to the meat of this piece, let me just tell ya that I’m not conceded in the least. All my life, even before I went all Hollywood, people have not just looked at me, not just glanced at me, but have literally stared at me. I can recall when me and my sisters were growing up, we would often hear momma say, “don’t stare a hole in somethin… Continue

Marry Yourself

Ladies, how many of us are still awaiting our Prince Charming and dreaming like little girls about that fairytale wedding that’s just gotta happen? How many of us are at our wits end because it doesn’t seem as though he’s out there? Well ladies, why not marry ourselves? I mean, yeah it sounds a little crazy and even desperate, maybe, but think about it. Who could possibly love us more than we love ourselves? You do love you, don’t you? Here’s what you gotta do. Start planning your wedding. Don’… Continue

The Perfect Body

In this great age of “Nip & Tuck” I now realize that I have the perfect body. Even after four children, three of which were delivered via c-section, I still have the perfect body. As a black woman, on the brink of celebrating my 41st birthday, I must admit that I, too, have thought about going under the knife in hopes of regaining my pre-baby figure which I never got a chance to fully grow into and appreciate. Shortly after my fourth child was born, I started my research to track down a bod… Continue

Daddy Where Are You?

As a single parent of four children, three of them whom are boys, I ask the question, “daddy where are you”? My own biological father was not in my life, but I did have a daddy. My mother married an older man who, being born in the early 1900’s, 1910 to be exact, was old school. I didn’t find out until I was grown with my own child that that particular man was not my real father. First forward to 2008 as I am raising my four children alone, I have to ask the question, once more, “daddy where ar… Continue

Rediscovering Me, Myself and I

Do you feel guilty when you treat yourself to a movie, a lunch not consisting of last nights leftovers, how about something as simple as your favorite magazine? Did you answer yes to one of these questions? If you did, chances are, you are a mother. I knew it. I’m a mother too. Actually, a mother times four. With four children, I rarely have time to think about myself. Now before the children started to arrive, I knew how to treat myself real special. That’s because there was only me, myself and… Continue

Death to the Deadbeat

I’m sorry if this offends anyone, but it is the only way that I can ease some of the pain and rage that I feel within my every pore. The subject that I am writing about is deadbeats. “Death to the Deadbeats”, I say. If you are not a deadbeat then you should not be offended. If you are a compassionate person who has never been the victim of a deadbeat then this may offend you. At any rate, I write this not to offend, but to bring peace and tranquility to my own ravaged spirit. My definition of… Continue

What Do You Mean, Get a Real Job???

Hello, my name is Trisha Martin and I am a single parent. A single parent of four children. Two of whom are teenagers and the other two are grade school aged. Need I say more? I left a thirteen year career to be a full time mom and entrepreneur. Although this choice has left me monetarily disabled to a certain degree, I have no regrets about the sacrifice. To me, parenting is a job that one should not take lightly. Coming from someone who in her early teenage years could not imagine ever having… Continue
