So.... we had a family meeting this week, and after I had my say, I asked the boys if there was anything good or bad that they wanted to share.
So my youngest (he's 7) shared that he had an awesome day at school, and told about his friends and the fun they had. Then he proceeded to say "oh yeah, I have something for the family meeting".
"I think we need a dad, a real dad".
So I asked about their biological father (whom they visit when we go back to my hometown on holidays, but not much else).…

3. I am thankful for all of my new friends and connections on BMC!!! I've had many great conversations and idea exchanges from the moms here.

Okay moms, we celebrated, were elated, we are walking on Cloud 9. But as President Elect Obama explained, we must be the change we seek in the world.
What are you doing in your home, community, personal life, career, world?
How are you working for change?
Will you do anything differently?
Do you feel different?
How does having a Black President CHANGE things for you?

Hey Moms,
I just have to celebrate the VICTORY! ! !
My sons and I stayed up to see Barack accept his position as President Elect of the United States of America.
We are so excited ! ! !
This election is not only a political victory but a social and psychic victory. We have children who have experienced something we NEVER experienced as kids- someone who looks like them in the most powerful position in the world.
The closest I've ever come to seeing black folks in power en masse has been whi…

Well, as many of you know, over the summer I was very attentive to working out and joined FastGirls to implement fasting in my daily life. Well it was great. This summer, I shed 18 pounds. And I am still working out and fasting.
As a part of the fasting regimen, I learned to eat more lightly. Fruit and tea for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and Salad for supper. I'd have some raw veggies and hummus or soup or trail mix for an evening snack.
The problem? My sons are back home and they are HONG…

I see a lot of us are frustrated with the school system and have a desire to home school, but because of structural constraints (jobs, school, etc) we are not able to walk immediately into home schooling.
I suggest that we do what many of our ethnic counterparts do. Saturday school. When Chinese immigrants come to the US, they have children and then they start Saturday schools to teach their children about Chinese culture, language, foods, social customs, literature etc.
While many of us are n…

Hey Ladies,
This is to all of the single moms out there.
(But if you're a married mom, answer this for me; How did you meet your husband?)
Now, back to the question at hand. Have you ever tried on-line dating? I mean for real, not hookups, not one time meet and greets (aka one nite stands...) but real, "I'll see you Tuesday at 4 for coffee then Friday at 7 for dinner..." dating. Does this even exist? Am I imagining things?
In the past, I've met boyfriends at work or school. Well, now, I'm at…

Hey Ladies,
I'm on vacation in Los Angeles, and I'm having a great time. As a Southern girl, I never had a desire to visit California. My childhood images of LA consisted of gang violence, the dangers of the LAPD, and rich white celebrities. However, last year, one of my close friends picked up and moved to LA. So here I am, exploring neighborhoods, dining at cute and delicious restaurants and generally being a 'tourist'. I am having a great time.
So far, I've lunched at California Pizza Kitch…

Shout out to LynValerie for the inspiration for this blog. It all started with her post
Motivation
I think we all struggle with motivation from time to time, especially for those of us who are students, SAHMs or mompreneurs. Our schedules are much more flexible than average, and we can exercise a lot more control over our days than some moms who work a scripted 9-5. This control and flexibility can be bo…

What are you claiming independence from? Seven years ago, I claimed my independence from mediocrity. I left a relationship that was a dramatic roller coaster, I began pursuing an advanced degree, I reclaimed my fitness, and I began to nurture the inklings of a postive relationship. Looking back, I realize I made quite a gutsy move, but I also know it was a move that saved my life.
This year I am claiming my independence from financial fear. I spent the last two years repairing my credit- with g…

My health and fitness goals for this month are:
1. complete 8 workouts weekly 5 in the gym and 3 outside
2. Resume my yoga practice
3. Drink 1Gallon of water daily
4. Fast 1 day per week
5. return to The Makers Diet and or the Heal Thyself Diet
To facilitate my workout goals, and to remain accountable, I will start reporting them here on my blog instead of the AAWF group page. I do not have the patience or desire to record everything I eat in a day, so I will not be doing a log of my food plan,…

I went to bed early last night- around midnight, and surprisingly, did not awaken when the 7:30 sunshine beamed through my window. Instead, I was deeply engaged in a super dreamy dream with Senator Barack H. Obama..... Mmmm Hmmmm
(insert wavy lines and dreamy segue music here)
I was in a hallway with several other people, writing furiously on some type of exam. I finished and went into a classroom with you know who at the desk. (Yes, Senator Obama himself) I leaned over to talk to him about wh…

I was feeling very unmotivated this morning. I did not want to get up, did not want to go to the gym, did not want to go outside where its already HOT at 8:00 in the morning, and certainly did not want to get all sweaty working out.
Luckily the Universe had it in for me, and the phone started ringing at 7:30 am, and there was no drifting back off into sleep. First my mom called, then she directed me to make more calls, and finally I recieved a call from a friend in the ATL, and I just gave up.…

Hey Everybody,
I just sent 17 text messages wishing various dads Happy Father's Day. That's 17 families who are benefitting from positive, involved, nurturing relationships between men and their children. That's about 30+ kids who know their fathers, see them on a regular basis, and know that some one has their back, regardless of what they get into. That's 17 men who are working at building thier families, caring for their children, and supporting their co-parent/wives in the journey of parent…
